The ratio between two numbers is the same as the quotient of the fraction that includes the two numbers. In general, it’s expressed like this:

Theory

The ratio between the numbers $a$ and $b$ is $\frac{a}{b}$ . The first number is the numerator and the second number is the denominator.

Here are a few examples.

Example 1

The ratio between $9$ and $36$ is

\frac{9}{36} = \frac{9 \div 9}{36 \div 9} = \frac{1}{4} = 0.25 .

Example 2

The ratio between 36 and 9 is

\frac{36}{9} = \frac{4 \cdot 9}{9} = \frac{4}{1} = 4 .
