The ratio between two numbers is the same as the quotient of the fraction that includes the two numbers. In general, it’s expressed like this:

The ratio between the numbers a and b is a b. The first number is the numerator and the second number is the denominator.

Here are a few examples.

Example 1

The ratio between 9 and 36 is

9 36 = 9 ÷ 9 36 ÷ 9 = 1 4 = 0.25.

Example 2

The ratio between 36 and 9 is

36 9 = 4 9 9 = 4 1 = 4.
